Jules Isaac (1877-1963)On 4 September 2023, La Poste issued a stamp depicting Jules ISAAC, co-author of a famous history manual and founder of the Judeo-Christian Friendship of France, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of its death. An associate professor of history, author of the famous textbooks, the Malet-Isaac, Inspector General of Public Instruction, Jules Isaac placed all his life in the service of the formation of youth, the search for truth, peace and reconciliation. Born into an Israelite family from Alsace-Lorraine, he was born in Rennes in 1877, at random from the career of a military father. A high in the cult of the homeland and the Republic, he was "French up to the marrow of the bones".Corner of Charles Péguy, hired to defend Captain Dreyfus in the name of justice, he fought in the trenches and, after the war, he worked for Franco-German reconciliation. Chasted from education by the Vichy regime, he became a pariah. He then redirected his work towards finding the roots of anti-Semitism. Despite the disappearance of his wife Laure and his daughter Juliet in the hell of Auschwitz, he found the courage to open a dialogue with the Christian world based on the historical knowledge of the birth of Christianity by recalling the Jewishness of Jesus and demonstrating the inanity of the accusations made for centuries against the Jews. He published his great book Jesus and Israel in 1948, at the same time as he founded the Judeo-Christian Friendship of France. His visit to Pope John XXIII on 13 June 1960 was decisive in changing the Church's gaze on Judaism and putting an end, with the Declaration Nostra Aetate of the Second Vatican Council, two thousand years of contempt and tragic ignorance. In this sense, his work was prophetic and revolutionary. He died on 5 September 1963.
