Description: Presented is a fine antique silver snuff box made in France dating between 1809 and 1819. This is completely hand engraved, ninety-five percent silver, which is of a higher purity than sterling, called "first standard silver". The engravings are very distinct and artfully done. The top of the box features a hat amidst musical instruments and foliage. The bottom bears a very finely etched, 16-point star, which you can see in our photo showing the ruler. There are a variety of lovely decorative borders lining every edge of the outer surfaces. The hinge of the box works well and the top closes neatly. The inside is hallmarked on both top and bottom with France's 950 guarantee (dog) and Paris guarantee marks. The rooster stamp indicating France's first standard silver purity is inside the box on the outer surface of the bottom rim. All marks, though some are indistinct to the untrained eye, are shown in our photos. This piece is in great condition for its age and the engravings are crisp. There are a few small dents, no breaks, no splits, no monogram removals and no repairs. The box measures 2 1/2 inches long by 1 3/8 inches wide by almost 3/4 inches high. Weight: 29.7 grams. tm Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
