Description: 1985 erotic drama The Alcove also known as L'Alcova starring Lilli Carati, Annie Belle, Laura Gemser, Al Cliver and directed by Joe D'Amato. The Story: The year is 1936 and Italy is celebrating its new African colony (essentially modern-day Ethiopia). An Italian Army Colonel (Cliver) returns home from the Second Abyssinian War bringing along a woman as his slave or concubine - the 'gift' of an Arab tribal king for saving his life. Not at all pleased with being a slave, the 'Ebony Princess' (Gemser) plots her revenge starting with the seduction of the wife's mistress. Jealousy spreads like wildfire and soon she has reduced the whole household to erotic chaos! Comments: In the mid-1980's Italian director Joe D'Amato stopped making his swinging 70's "Black Emanuelle" films (which featured Laura Gemser) and his gut-munching cannibal-zombie films (which also featured Laura Gemser) and tried his hand at classy erotica, of the sort associated with fellow countryman Tinto Brass (and, of course, featuring Laura Gemser). The Alcove was probably his best effort. The Alcove turned out to be a good character study by not focusing on sex. Rather we get a glimpse inside a decaying Italian household where everything and everybody is about to unravel - in large part, because the slave girl starts enjoying life in the 'big house' and decides she doesn't want to be a slave anymore. It's downhill from there. Trivia: The credits claim the screenplay is based on a novel by a Judith Wexley. However, this 'novel' does not seem to exist; it's not even clear if Ms Wexley exists. More Trivia: Laura Gemser, with almost 60 films to her credit, made her screen debut in Black Emanuelle [note: one M in Emanuelle], a truly forgettable bit of mid-1970's Euro-trash. But in that same year, she also got a 'bit part' as a masseuse in another erotic drama: Emmanuelle II aka Emmanuelle L'antivierge [note: two M's in Emmanuelle]. This latter film starred Sylvia Kristel and Umberto Orsini; featured a musical score of Academy Award winner Francis Lai and the brilliant cinematography of Academy Award nominated Robert Fraisse. Emmanuelle II was very well received and suddenly Ms Gemser had arrived! She went on to make a 'franchise' out of trashy Emanuelle [one M] knock-offs, many by director Joe D'Amato. Per the label, the film has 97 minutes running time. The film is presented in widescreen 1.85:1 format; English audio only.
