Description: The listing is a repair service for the automatic transmission shift computer governor of the Renault 4141, commonly used in the DeLorean DMC 12. Part Number: 104218 Renault engineers adequately designed an electronic device that uses a generator and rheostat to produce a voltage that is monitored by Op-Amp comparators, which then turn two transistor "switches" on or off to control the shift solenoids inside the transmission that select the gear. It is a very simple analog device. There are two versions of the board set, each with their own common weak points. Typically there is either a solder quality problem or the two large electrolytic capacitors go bad (they physically explode from heat and/or over voltage). I will remove the conformal coating from your boards, replace the two capacitors with military specification higher voltage higher heat rated tantalum, re-flow and repair all solder joints, apply new conformal coating, and reseal the unit. If your "core" needs more work, please contact me directly to discuss. For many years, people reliably repaired these units and they have worked well. If you have the skills I suggest you try to repair it yourself, I offer my service for those who either can't or don't want to. The more recent proprietary "microprocessor" alternative is overkill for this application, and no computing power is needed to turn two switches on and off! Claims of "greater shifting precision" and "more aggressive shift points for better performance" are irrelevant. There is no "precision" in turning a switch on or off! The shift points are set by the throttle position, so if you want "more aggressive" shifting, just push your foot down a little more! Any changes to impact the way these two switches turn on or off may have long-term impact on the reliability of the transmission, I trust the original Renault engineers. There is also a risk in the process used to replace the original boards with new ones, that is the epoxy seal for where the wires enter the housing. To replace the boards, the wires are cut and the epoxy is drilled out, significantly increasing the possibility of the repaired unit not being water tight. Once your original boards are gone, you can't get them back! You are stuck with the proprietary replacement that no one else can repair. Considering how most DMC 12 owners put few miles on their cars and almost always in good weather, potential issues from the new boards and process to install them may not be seen until well into the future and it will be difficult to diagnose the cause. Save some money, and stick with the reliable OEM design.
