Description: Original c.WW1 British map of "DALIAN" on the LIAODONG PENINSULA (YELLOW SEA) CHINA. It's an original British Admiralty chart published in 1908 with a 'Magnetic Variation' date of 1913, which has been based on "...THE LATEST JAPANESE GOVERNMENT CHART".The title is "DAIREN WAN" which is known as "DALIAN" on the Liaodong Peninsula in the Yellow Sea to the East of Beijing. From a large collection recently sold off by Edinburgh University - hence ink stamping to rear. (Following both World Wars, the government distributed excess stocks of Allied maps, along with captured enemy examples, to various national institutions such as libraries, museums, universities etc.)A pencil note above the stamp suggests that it may first have been held by the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. This most likely connects the map to Professor ALAN GRANT OGILVIE who (in the late 1940’s) was both the President of the Society, and Head of the Geography Department at the University.OGILVIE was an eminent geographer whose service with the Royal Field Artillery in WW1 led him to transfer to the Royal Engineers for the purpose of mapping the Dardanelles and the Macedonian Front etc. His military service in Salonika, France and the Dardanelles saw him mentioned in dispatches, and in 1919 he attended the Paris Peace Conference representing the British delegation in respect to international boundary settlements. Following WW1 he resumed his academic career, rising to head Edinburgh University's Geography Department, and still finding time to become a Captain in the Home Guard during WW2. It's in good overall condition with some slight damage along the bottom edge (see photos). Will be sent rolled in a cardboard tube. (Ref - 2U / 291)
