Christian Friedrich Gonne, also called "Fritz" by his friends, was a doctor's son and first studied medicine. In 1834, at the age of 21, he began his studies at the Dresden Art Academy and received his first award after two years. Then he went to Pozen (now - Poznan) as a teacher. He then went on study trips to Antwerp, Berlin and Munich , where he won applause for his genre painting of card players in a mountain tavern, and then to Rome . Returning to Dresden at the end of the 1840s, he was commissioned by the Saxon Art Association to paint a large altarpiece for the town of Schellenberg (now Augustusburg in Saxony), Die Jünger in Emmaus . This was followed by another commission for an altarpiece for the Lauterbach church in Saxony. In 1848 he painted the wall paintings in the Palais Oppenheim on behalf of Martin Wilhelm Oppenheim, the next friend of the Grahl family. From 1857 to 1890 Gonne was a professor at the Dresden Academy of the Arts. Among his portraits, the portrait of King John of Saxony (1801-1873; set up in the town hall in Leipzig) has found general recognition. In 1869 his altar painting "Christ in Gethsemane" was donated to the Christuskirche in Freital-Deuben .From 1875 to 1877, Gonne painted the ceiling in the upper vestibule on the south side of the Semperoper, the central painting "The poetic justice with heroes from drama and opera" (destroyed during WWII bombardment in 1944).Friedrich Gonne died in Dresden in 1906.
