DescriptionCHARATAN’S MAKELondon, England SPECIAL 490 DC“L” (Lane Logo) Offering a collectible and beautiful CHARATAN’S MAKE, Straight Grain, SPECIAL grade, from the Lane Era. It’s also marked “London, England” Charatan is one of the most prestigious English pipe makers of all time, and this pipe is from the period where most people seek to collect them. It was bought used by me in the late 1970’s at the Town Crier pipe counter in Lawrence, KS I am a big fan of early Charatan pipes, and this one is really gorgeous to my eye. The bowl is tall and has a unique grain paired perfectly with the “comfort” double cut saddle bit. The bowl enjoys a great-looking smooth finish and shows off lots of prime straight grain, with excellent color and contrast. The condition of the exterior is excellent; has light signs of normal use, no issues. The inside of the bowl is well seasoned, with the draw hole bottom center. The stem is original double cut stem with logo intact. It has very few small tooth marks, and is in fine shape overall. It’s notably light in weight for a large-scale pipe, coming in just over 1.5 ounces, and draws well. Freshly polished and ready to smoke!
