CDV – “Action Off Cherbourg, June 19, 1864”

Description: CDV – “Action Off Cherbourg, June 19, 1864” This image captures the engagement of the CSS Alabama, and the USS Kearsarge, and entitled by the artist, J.W. Anderson, “Action Off Cherbourg, June 19, 1864.” CSS Alabama, commanded by Raphael Semmes, had completed 5 successful commerce missions in the Atlantic, and had sailed into Cherbourg for repairs, when the USS Kearsarge caught up to her in port. Not being able to engage the Alabama, while in a foreign port, Captain John Winslow of the Kearsarge waited until the Alabama came out, and their combat of the coast of France on the 19th of June. The Alabama sunk under heavy fire from Kearsarge, with many of the confederate crew killed and wounded. A few small ships in the vicinity picked up the confederate crew, including Semmes and many others, and sailed away to Southampton, England under the protest of the Union captain. The crew of the Kearsarge wanted their captain to allow them to turn their guns on the escaping ships with the Southern rescuees, but they escapes without capture.I did not find any information on the artist in a quick search. Amazing just how many different paints, prints, engravings, and drawings exist of this famous naval engagement. This artwork was obviously one done during the later part of the war, or just a few years following. The carte has only the title and artist listed on the back.Fine condition.View photos for condition and detail.
