Description: CARYOTA URENS - REAL PLANT - GIANT SOLITARY PALM ! AWESOME FISHTAIL PALM - FISH TAIL PALM. This plant is utterly gorgeous! THIS IS NOT THE COMMON "CARYOTA MITIS"!! Again this is NOT the clumping small species! This is the read deal!! This is Caryota urens! It is growing in a "rocket pot" (as some people refer to it). Its a taller style pot that trees grow well in, because they have additional depth to drop their roots without the pot being too big otherwise. You can also see that the roots from this plant/tree have existed the bottom of the pot. Depending on your circumstance, this plant could legitimately be planted in the ground at this point (assuming you can protect it from foot traffic or a landscaper/mower), or it can continue to be grown for longer in its pot and even potted up later. It doesn't matter how you go, but let me give you the secret(s) to Caryota urens:It has been argued that this plant may be one of, if not the fastest growing palm trees in the world. Now, don't be confused... Caryota urens is a blazing fast grower, BUT BUT BUT - that is when it hits it's "critical mass situation". To translate - there is nothing fast about this plant growing and there has been NOTHING fast about it's growing up to this point. When planted in the ground, this tree has a reputation that it will grow at a moderate rate of speed. That may last for 1 or 2 years. Once critical mass is hit, its a different story. At full speed and if in the correct conditions - This plant has been said to grow 10 feet per year in prime conditions!Im going to have to steal some Palmpedia info since it's just so good for descriptive purposes (see below and check out the part from the section on 'cultivation'):Habitat - Caryota urens is naturally found from sea level to 300 m, in Myanmar (Burma) India, and Sri Lanka where it grows on plateau or in rain forest clearings. In habitat, they are most often found in well-draining, humus-rich soil where they receive abundant water.Description - This species is solitary-trunked to 40 feet in height.. The bipinnate leaves are triangular in shape, bright to deep green, 12 feet long. This species is monocarpic, the completion of the flower and fruiting process results in the death of the tree. Cultivation- The trunks are used as building material and the sap is converted to sugar, wine, and sago (it has been used to make an alcoholic beverage in its native range). 3-foot tall specimens in 5 gallon pots will hit 30 or more feet in about three (3) or four (4) years planted in the ground!!!!! That's not a mis-print! They will survive freezing temperatures well into the mid-20's F. or below. *****BTW... you'll OFTEN (cough, cough) see people selling "seeds" of Caryota urens. You'll see people all over selling seeds... you'll see it online.... yeah, you'll see it on eBay, other websites, yup yup yupper.... Funny though... you'll find it VERY HARD/bordline impossible, to find any ACTUAL plants for sale!!!! VERY VERY VERY hard/bordline impossible to find them for sale. Why? Because all of those people selling seeds are selling CRAP that isn't going to germinate. Long term stored seed of this palm loses viability and that exacerbates over time. Bottom line, like many plants, you'll see people always selling "seed" but nobody selling the plant.. There is a reason for it....(I could show people so many examples of this!) If you have the spot in your yard, and you want the tree, then THIS is the ONLY way to go. I have YEARS into the few I have (this being one of them, all virtually identical). This tree is known to do exceedingly well in California, Florida, Texas, and perhaps the southern portions of states like Louisiana, etc. Again from Palmpedia: They will survive freezing temperatures well into the mid-20's F., or below . Figure - zone 10 yes for sure, zone 9 - yes for sure - according to all the available data - I would assume that the SOUTHERN portions of zone 8 would be a winner as well (but the zone 8 info I am forming from my exposure of information I have read over the years)Photos 1-3 are of the exact plant you will receive, and you will receive it, in the rocket pot you see in the photos. Photos 4-8 are internet derived images for reference so you can get an idea of what this species, as well as a giant solitary fishtail palm looks like! **Photo is provided to give you a good view of the plant. Plants are not always flawless. Sometimes there are imperfections as with virtually all plants. Plants are packed in order to eliminate the possibility of damage however sometimes things happen that cannot be controlled. Shipping a plant always provides for a possibility of some damage to leaves, etc. The overall health of a plant is not defined by the perfection of every single physical facet of the plant. Most sentient people know this! If you're not clear on what this means, please don't bid or buy. I only sell plants to people who understand what they are buying and what mail ordering plants is. I sell plants that I would be happy to receive myself. Ground shipping to the continental USA only. FREE S/H CONTINENTAL USA ONLY - ***If you're in Hawaii or Puerto Rico and have an interest in the plant, please contact me FIRST for shipping details and costs.***** IMPORTANT NOTE: READ THIS: PLANTS ARE SHIPPED ONE OR TWO DAYS PER WEEK.
