THE SKIRMISHES AND CAMPS IN BUNKER HILL, WEST VIRGINIA ~ FROM THE WILLIAM 'BILL' GAVIN COLLECTION ~ This interesting artifact, a very large 30mm brass flat (or coin) button with broken and missing shank, was recovered at Bunker Hill, West Virginia, by Civil War metal detecting pioneer, William 'Bill' Gavin and comes from his own collection and display case # 29. This button could pre-date the Civil War, but could have been lost during one of the encampments or one of the many skirmishes and actions that occurred there during the American Civil War. There were at least 8 small battles, skirmishes, or actions that occurred from 1861 to 1864 at Bunker Hill, West Virginia, and numerous Union and Confederate units camped in the area. This artifact was a part of the collection of the famous relic hunter Bill Gavin and was in a group of relics that were identified in his original display case # 29 as having been found Bunker Hill in West Virginia. Bill Gavin was the first relic hunter to use a metal detector to search for Civil War artifacts (back in the 1940s following his graduation from West Point - the first location was Cold Harbor in 1946) and amassed a huge collection of items in the decades that followed. Gavin wrote four books, including the well-know "Accoutrement Plates North and South, 1861-1865" and several articles and was well respected for his knowledge in the field. He passed away in 2010. A provenance letter will be included with this relic. On July 15 a Union force advanced on Bunker Hill and came into contact with a small force of Confederate cavalrymen. In the ensuing skirmish, the Union forces drove the Confederates from the town and occupied the area before proceeding to Charles Town. Later in the Gettysburg Campaign, Confederate general J. Johnston Pettigrew of North Carolina expired on July 17 in this home from wounds suffered during Lee’s retreat through Falling Waters. Here is Pvt. Jacob Herr‘s account of the late afternoon firefight at Bunker Hill. Two companies from the 87th (G and H) and two from the 116th Ohio (A and I) held positions east of the town. They were under the command of Ohio Maj. William T. Morris. Confederates from Brig. Gen. Albert G. Jenkins’ brigade of western Virginia mounted infantry and cavalry soon approached. “13th June 1863 – This afternoon about four Oclock, our pickets were driven in by the rebels. Our little band of veterans were amediately drawn up in line to receive them. But they came to slow for us. We went half way but then it commenced. Our line was as follows: Co. G. A. I. and H. was on the exstream left. We numbered about two hundred fifty men, while the rebs had 1500 strong all mounted infantry. We fought them about one & a half hour in the open field, then we fell back to the churches which we had prepared for that purpose. There we kept them at bay. There was a heavy fire kept up until it was to dark for us to see. As far as I know the killed and wounded are as follows: Samuel Meginly killed. Lt. M. S. Slothower, Corp. J. T. Henry, B. S. Kaufman & J. Landen wounded out of Co. H. Frank Welsh wound Co. G and one capt. out of the Ohio wounded.” Michael S. Slothower was the first officer of the 87th to be killed in combat in the Civil War. He would not be the last. The 24-year-old bachelor from Washington Township in northwestern York County had been a laborer before the war. He had enrolled in downtown York in August 1861 and had twice been promoted, reaching the rank of second lieutenant at the time of his death. He was initially buried at Bunker Hill but was later re-interred in the Winchester National Cemetery in grave #1062, according to regimental researcher Dennis W. Brandt. Slothower’s first cousin, Orderly Sgt. Andrew Bentz Smith, and several other members of the 87th would be taken as prisoners of war at Bunker Hill. We include as much documentation with the relics as we possess. This includes copies of tags if there are original identification tags or maps, as well as a signed letter of provenance with the specific recovery information. All of the collections that we are offering for sale are guaranteed to be authentic and are either older recoveries, found before the 1960s when it was still legal to metal detect battlefields, or were recovered on private property with permission. Land on Battlefields that is now Federally owned, or owned by the Trust, was acquired after the relics were recovered. We will not buy or sell any items that were recovered illegally, nor will we sell any items that we suspect were recovered illegally. Thank you for viewing!
