One of my favorite fishing spots is about one hour from myhome and is up in the mountains. It's a beautiful cold-water fishingmountain lake (no catfish, carp, bass, etc.) and is a wonderful placeto catch rainbow trout. I was up there last summer and there was afamily of 3 that came up and started fishing not too far from me. Notclose enough to be a bother, but close enough that I could hear themand watch them. I had already been there about 2 hours and was doingsome catch and release fishing, as I had already caught my limitwithin the first hour and had them cleaned and on ice in my cooler.After about an hour, they hadn't even had a bite. Their son (I'mguessing he was around 7 or 8 years old) asked his dad how come I wasdoing so well, and they couldn't even get a bite. The dad told him tocome ask me what I was using for bait that was working so well. Sohim and his parents walked up to where I was and started visiting withme. When their son walked up to me, he had a small "Spiderman" rodand reel that his parents had just got for him at Wal-Mart. He alsohad a bunch of nightcrawlers in a standard Wal-Mart container (theones that resemble a cottage cheese container). I told him to have aseat next to me and do exactly what I do. I told him I had been usingpower bait, but his worms should do just fine, also. But first, Itold his parents I would like to re-rig him using one of my extraBWABs. (I always have 3 with me in my tackle box at all times). Theparents had never heard of such a thing, so I gave a quick demo of howit works, and rigged one up on their son's little rod & reel. I setthe hook about 18 inches above the sinker, as that's where I had mineset and was doing just fine. He cast his line out, and for a $10.00kid's rig, it actually got his line out about 15 yards from shore -which was plenty good enough, as the water gets deep quick there. Itold him to let the line settle till the bobber stood up, then reel inthe slack. After about 10 minutes, the bobber made a small, quick"nod" then stood back up. Trout are know for this. They will "tease"a bait several times sometimes before actually taking it. I told himto wait for the bobber to go down and move sideways before setting thehook. Seconds later it happened. The bobber tipped, went sideways,and he yanked his little rod and hooked his first fish! He reeled itin and I used my dip net to scoop it out of the water. It was abeautiful 12 inch Rainbow Trout. His excitement and the look on hisface was absolutely priceless! He was literally jumping up and downlaughing, and with a smile as big as his face would allow! I showedhim how to take the hook out and we put his trout on his dad'sstringer. I rigged both of his parents' up with BWABs from my sparesand we all sat and fished for another couple of hours. Each of themgot their limit. They tried to give me back my BWABs but I told themto keep them use them in the future. I don't remember their names,but I found out from talking to them that they had never been fishingbefore. They had just recently moved to Colorado. They had purchaseda book on fishing and went to Wal-Mart and got the bare necessitieswhich included a small tackle box, hooks, sinkers, stringer,nightcrawlers, etc. There is no amount of money in the world that canmake you feel as good as seeing them catch their first fish ever, thengo on and catch their limit!
