Description: DETAILS: Original pinback button issued by the Black Panther Party demanding the release of Party Chairman Bobby Seale who had been arrested along with seven other defendants known as the "Chicago Eight". They included Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, David Dellinger. They were accused of planning to subvert the 1968 Democratic National Convention by inciting a riot. Measures 1 3/4" inches. Seale, who was the only black member of the Chicago Eight, was singled out for special treatment by Judge Julius Hoffman who was a Republican appointee and a close friend of Richard Nixon. The judge began the first day of the trial by ordering that Seale be bound and gagged in the courtroom because of his outspoken objections to his lack of legal representation. This treatment continued for the entirity of the trial with Seale bound and gagged sitting next to his white co-defendants who were neither shackled or muzzled. Though prosecutors were unable to get a conviction against Seale, Judge Hoffman still sentenced the Panther Chairman to four years in prison for 16 counts of contempt - one for each of Seale's outbursts during his trial. The Black Panther Party (BPP) was a revolutionary socialist political organization founded by Marxist college students Bobby Seale (Chairman) and Huey Newton (Minister of Defense) in 1966 in Oakland, California. The party was active in the United States with chapters in numerous cities. The core mission of the group was to organize the African American community in order to prevent police abuse, combat racial discrimination and promote the health and well being of the black population. They demanded racial equality and were not intimidated by systemic institutional racist barriers to attain it. Many of its members were targeted by the police and imprisoned for their demands of greater racial equity in American society. The group is considered to be among the most important political movements in African American history.
