Description: For strong mathematic skills throughout K-12 school years, I recommend Saxon Math - the earliest editions you can find. The earlier editions have no hidden agenda in the problems (no politically-correct modified wording) and are fun, at times humorous, and help the student retain all they have learned throughout the year. Editions newer than 2003 are the result of HMH editing, updating the timeless wording of the homework problems and removing the integration of geometry from the Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 texts to create one year of pure geometry. Not a good move in my opinion! Algebra is a bit of a mind bend in the first place, but to stop studying it for 1 year then to continue is a poor choice. I have found the integration of geometry into algebra allows the student to simply broaden their learning experience. Saxon uses a spiral method of learning. The skills learned yesterday are included in the homework today, tomorrow, and throughout the year. With the Saxon curriculum, there is no ‘test prep’ or review required! That includes test prep for standardized tests such as ACT, PSAT, and SAT. Students of Saxon Math have consistently outscored students of any other curriculum in these standardized tests! The best way to fully learn math is to work every problem in the book. It is taught like the telling of a story, you would not want to skip over a chapter! I highly recommend access to a computer be limited during homework and tests as students have easily found a forum for solutions worked out for them! Lesson plans are not necessary, as noted in the front of the text, as the student is to work one lesson each day for 4 days, then test on the fifth day. The text teaches each lesson in a clear, conversational style using examples and sample problems, generally requiring no further instruction. However, there are also available DVDs ‘DIVE ‘discs for each upper level course that feature a person demonstrating problem solutions typical of the example problems in the text. There are Saxon placement tests available online to determine which level to begin teaching. Saxon texts K through 8-7 (example: 8-7 is for average 8th graders and advanced 7th graders) are numbered to place the student, but should be used consecutively; no skipping a grade! Then move into Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Advanced Mathematics, and Calculus. Each text has a companion Solutions Manual with line-by-line steps, Answer Key, and Test Packet. The Homeschool Packet includes an Introduction to using the Saxon Math program in the homeschool environment, line-by-line solutions for Tests, and answers to all of the Problem Set problems in the text. The Test Forms are all the tests, administered every 5th day of school, with answer sheet to be copied for taking each test. See the testing schedule noted above.
