Description: Buffulo and Susquehanna (B & S) Railroad Coe's Wrench Company Monkey Wrench. Dimensions: approx. 12 inches long with maximum jaw opening of 2 inches. This wrench has been tastefully restored and is in all original Very Fine Condition (see photos). It is clearly stamped as follows: "B & S" on the both sides of the shaft, "COES WRENCH CO WORCHESTER MASS USA", and "MFG UNDER L.COES+PAT'S". Coes Wrench Company, founded in 1888, was a tool manufacturing company based in Worcester, Massachusetts. The company was originally part of the L. and A. G. Coes & Company. Coes Wrench Company. The company manufactured the screw type wrench invented and patented by Loring Coes in 1841 and commonly known as the "monkey wrench". Prior to the invention of the screw wrench, the two common wrenches of the time, the English patent wrench and the Merrick wrench (also known as the Springfield wrench), needed two hands to adjust, whereas the Coe's screw wrench could be used and adjusted with one hand. The Buffalo and Susquehanna Railroad was a railroad company that formerly operated in western and north central Pennsylvania and western New York. The B & S Railroad was created and constructed by Frank H. Goodyear, a Buffalo, New York fuel dealer, to move his lumber and coal from north central Pennsylvania to his businesses and companies in Buffalo.It was created in 1893 by the merger and consolidation of several smaller logging railroads. It operated independently until 1929, when a majority of its capital stock was purchased by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.
