Description: The funny thing about the launch of the Ferrari F355 was that it happened in two phases: First, there was a European wave, with U.S. car writers introduced to the car a few months later. This was, perhaps, an effort to help sell whatever examples of its predecessor, the 348, were still on the market. But news of a new Ferrari is not the kind of thing you can keep quiet for long. Not even back in 1994. Fortunately, Autoweek was able to score a European drive review of the new car, and we brought you our thoughts on the F355 in the June 20, 1994, issue.Unlike the Ferrari 360 that succeeded it, the F355 was a substantial revision of the 348 rather than a totally new car. But it was more than a reskin; features like an adaptive suspension system helped make it a more forgiving driver on less-than-perfect roads. Meanwhile, its 3.5-liter V8, producing 380 hp and revving to an 8,500 rpm redline, left nothing to complain about. Ditto the gated six-speed manual transmission. But none of that is particularly surprising on a Ferrari. One unexpected area of interest was the F355’s aerodynamic underside, which we deemed “much like the flat underbody of a Formula One car.” In fact, we were so impressed by this feature that we put it -- rather than a glamour shot of the red Pininfarina bodywork -- on the cover of issue.Read our thoughts on the F355 in excerpts of the June 20, 1994, issue of Autoweek
