Notes: Gela (Gelas) was an ancient greek city founded by colonists from Rhodes and Crete in 688 BC and named for the local river of the same name. Gela flourished and after only a century, a group of Geloi founded the colony of Agrigento. Gela became the most influential polis in Sicily between the 7th and 6th centuries and was also famously the place where the greek tragedy playwright Aeschylus lived and died in 456 BC. Tyrants: The city was frequently ruled during its known history by tyrants. First noted is the tyrant Cleander who ruled Gela between 505 BC and 498 BC. After his death, power transferred to his brother Hippocrates, who conquered Callipoli, Leontini, Naxos, Hergetios and Zancles (present-day Messina). Only Syracuse managed to escape the Gelese expansion. Hippocrates defeated the Syracusan army at the Heloros river and besieged the city but was convinced to retreat in exchange for possession of Camarina. The tyrant died in 491 in a battle against the Siculi, the native Sicilian people. he city next was ruled by tyrant Gelon and his brother Hieron from 484 to 478 BC followed by brother Polyzelos. Democracy Restored The period after Polyzelos is uncertain for a time and it is believed the citizens may have freed themselves from the tyrants and ruled as a democracy as many of the Geloi returned from exile in Syracuse in this period, and the city regained part of its power by 415. In 406 the Carthaginians conquered Gelian colony Agrigento and destroyed it and attacked Gela. Help of Dionysius I of Syracuse did not arrive in time to save Gela and, after heroic deeds, Gela was ruined and its treasures sacked in 405 BC and many survivors took refuge in Syracuse.
