Description: Antique Joseph H. Watson coin silver ladle. Marked WATSON PHILADELPHIA and a flower hallmark. It measures 12 1/4 in long approximately. The bowl measure 4 1/4 in by 3 1/2 across the mouth approximately. The bowl measures 1 1/4 top to bottom approximately. It weighs 8 oz on my scale. There is a monogram on the handle shown in photos. The Ladle has normal wear for age shown in photos. There are a couple small dings in the bottom of the bowl I will try to shown in photos. The surface of the ladle has mild scratches consistent with a piece of this age. I will try to shown in photos. Joseph H. Watson was silversmith in Warrington Va. and bought the stock and stand of John M Jacobs in Warrington Nov.1 1844. Both men have ties and either grew up (Jacobs was born and raised in the Philadelphia area) or lived in the Philadelphia for some time. Probably the reason this piece looks like a Philadelphia piece and and has the Philadelphia hallmark. I spent a good time trying to figure out why a Virginia silversmith had a Philadelphia hallmark and believe when Watson bought Jacobs shop the Philadelphia hallmark stamp was part of the purchase. Also it is thought Jacobs may have trained Watson. This is not only my thought by but one I found discussed online. Not really sure but this is still a beautiful ladle. Please ask any questions before buying. Please look at the photos as they are part of the description. Thank you for looking.
