Description: Antique inlaid wooden box. Unusual antique box dates to the late 18th or early 19th century and is inlaid on all sides. Possibly of French origin, the center top panel shows men holding fish and a scale while a woman waits holding a basket. All 3 are barefoot and the men wear those sock hats native to France. The center panel is flanked by 2 Mermaids. The inlays have added penwork details.The beveled edges of the lid have line and geometric inlays. The sides of the lid and the bottom edge of the box have banded inlays. The sides are inlaid with reclining mermaids and the fishtailed winged horses of the sea from Greek mythology called the Hippocampus. The box is lined with very old possibly original faded purple velvet and old apparently original lock (no key) and hinges. The box measures 10 3/4" wide by 3 3/8" deep by 2 3/8" high. Condition is overall very good but as with many antiques that were used there are some problems: the lid has warped a bit and doesn't close snugly on the left side; there are some small losses to the veneer mostly on the corners,; it appears the left hinge pulled loose at one time leaving a chip out of the top edge of the bottom and the screws have been replaced with small nails; there's some losses and scratches to the varnish on the top.
