Description: Antique Beaded Necklace Hand Loom Made Sterling Clasp 1920's Needlework School ! This beautiful antique necklace was made on an Apache Bead Loom Patented in 1903. A colorful artistic design, using handmade tiny glass beads made by hand in Europe in the 1800's. In beautiful condition given its 100 plus years. To preserve this treasure it should be handled with care and treated as the one of a kind historic piece of art jewelry that it is !! The clasp works easily and though the sterling silver has some pitting from age is in good working order. This piece was most likely made by a student in her needlework school and repair studio in Manhattan NY, see detailed info below. Apache looms were originally patented in 1903 to offer 'hands on' beading, to the Victorian Lady, at home. The clippings and manuals state this loom can also be an invaluable tool, to Mothers and Teachers, "The lesson learned on a loom will help the children and ladies be skillfull with their fingers and develope their mechanical and artistic brains cells." My grandmother had many of these looms in her needlework studio and school in Manhattan NY 1907-1967 see photos. Where this necklace comes from --->>>>> This piece is from the many boxes threads, needles, sewing accoutrements, beaded bags, beads and remnants of pieces that were repaired over the decades at my grandmothers needlework school in Manhattan, LaMers Studio 1909-1967 (see photos) !! Often customers would bring in items for repair, and after they received the insurance money, as many of the wealthy customers insured their items, they would not return to pick up the piece. Women from around the world, mostly France, Germany and Switzerland would come to learn the skills of reweaving any fabric, repairing clothes, table clothes, and making beaded dresses, bags, shoes and jewelry. She had a thriving business during the depression of the 1930's when she catered to the wealthy who desired such beaded fashions. Some of her customers whom I have letters from were Nat King Cole, he was a heavy smoker and always burning his suits, Alice Tully of Lincoln Center, Henry Ford, yes THE Henry Ford, and Eleanor Roosevelt to name a few. She was quite the business woman at a time when women didn't own their own businesses.
