Description: A 5 1/4" tall cylinder-shaped clear-glass antique OPIUM and ALCOHOL pain - killing MEDICINE BOTTLE that is EMBOSSED on one side and has a PAPER LABELS on the other side. Note that the paper label reads "OPIUM 2 GR. to one ounce ... ALCOHOL 48%". This bottle is completely EMPTY now, it has NO contents. IMPORTANT NOTE: The paper label on this bottle is a high quality reproduced copy of the label that originally came on these bottles, but the bottle is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE hand Blown Into Mold bottle (BIM) with a tooled top, dating back to the 1800's.Bottle's label reads in part: "BATEMAN'S DROPS .... ALCOHOL 48%, OPIUM 2 GRAINS ... W.A. Crawford ... ESTABLISHED 1837 BALTIMORE, MD."Bottle embossed: "McCORMICK & CO. BALTO." Condition: This bottle has heavy stain (patina) and wear, though there isn't anything specifically wrong with it, NO cracks, chips, dings, damage, etc. Please see picture for better idea of bottle and label's condition. These tall slender round cylinder bottles are often seen for sale on eBay, and they are most always referred to as 'OPIUM' bottles. The label shows why, and it is also why we have the color-copied label on it, to show that these vials DID originally come with an opiated substance, as the label mentions 'OPIUM' (and 'ALCOHOL'!). Back in the day, products like this could of been purchased off of the shelf of an old time General Mercantile store but once the medicine was gone the pain came back and so another bottle was needed. Then another, and another, and another, until the Pure Food and Drug Administration started cracking down on opiate laced medicines like this that were creating addictive patterns in even the most disciplined persons, much as this same problem is affecting the country today.
