Description: ANTIQUE 18th. CENTURE (1700s) SCOTTISH BASKET HILT SWORD This very fine quality antique Scottish 18th Century basket hilt sword dates back to the 1700s & was bought by American Lieutenant John MacArthur who was a fighter pilot in the American 27th Aero Squadron, Air Service, United States Army in 1918.* He bought it in a upscale antique shop in London, England in June, 1918, It was returned to his family along with all of his personal effects after he was killed when his plane forced down & he was wounded & captured by the Germans on July 20, 1918. He died of his wounds on August 9, 1918 This sword was bought by MacArthur as he was of Scottish heritage. It is 37 3/8” overall length with a 31 9/16” x 1 5/8: double edged blade that has a 7” blood grove at the guard, iron basket hilt guard, black leather & twisted brass wire covered wood grip & crown style pommel cap. It is is quite good condition with light pitting with a dark brown patina & the grip still has all the leather & brass wire covering intact. *Lieutenant John MacArthur was a fighter pilot in the American 27th Aero Squadron, Air Service, United States Army & flew a Nieuport 28 fighter. He was an Ace & shot down 6 German airplanes between June 13, 1918 & July 20, 1918. It comes with a certificate of authenticity & historical research on Lieutenant MacArthur.
