Description: Rare 17th Century Rosary of the Passion, or "Rosencranz" beads. The cross is common and 19th century, but the rosary is much much older: the only similar ones I found were 17th century German, but this could be 18th century. I don't know if the hand-made beads are jet -- see how individual they are -- or another stone. The filigree gauds look to be silver, and were once gilded: you can see traces of gold in close-up photos. Many of the gauds have damage. There are fifteen tiny hand-cast symbols associated with Christ's passion, as shown in a 19th century holy card which is included, and I believe their number is complete:- two hands- two feet- a cock / rooster - a crown of thorns- a cross- Veronica's veil (it is next to the robe) - an axe (2nd to last photo shows axe, garment, and Veronica's veil)- Christ's garment (for which lots were thrown)-- dice - a plain heart- swords piercing a heart? or three nails?- a sponge? (see last photo with this and above sword or nails)- a ladder The rosary was restrung and incorrectly, for the cast symbols are not in the correct order, and the beads vary in number between the gauds and images. I think it's a treasure, having collected religious antiques for years, and I hope someone with access to records on the history of rosaries, will buy this and restore it. It will be sent Priority Mail and insured.
