Description: MINI SATSUMA VASE IN ARTS AND CRAFTS STYLE ..A STYLIZED FERN DESIGN REPEATS THREE TIMES AROUND VASE.. NICE SHAPE.. NICE DESIGN.. PIECE MEASURES 3 1/2" TALL.. CRAZING, LITTLE DISCOLORATION.. THERE IS A SPOT ON THE SIDE WHERE IT FLARES OUT, IN THE BLACK, WHERE IT LOOKS LIKE THERE WAS A SMALL CHIP IN THE BLANK WHICH HAS BEEN PAINTED OVER AND UNDER THE GLAZE.. I TRIED TO GET A PICTURE OF IT, BUT IT KEPT REFLECTING THE LIGHT.. I HAVE ADDED IT, SO HOPEFULLY YOU CAN FIGURE IT OUT.. YOU HAVE TO STUDY THE PIECE TO SEE IT.. THE BEST PART OF THIS PIECE IS THE ARTISTS MONOGRAM ON THE BOTTOM.. S M .. GREAT ARTS AND CRAFTS DESIGN.. AMERICAN SATSUMA WAS AN EXTENSION OF THE CHINA PAINTING CRAZE WHICH WAS FLOURISHING DURING THE ARTS AND CRAFTS MOVEMENT AT THE TURN OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY.. DURING WW1 BLANK CHINA FROM EUROPE WAS IN SHORT SUPPLY SO SATSUMA POTTERY BLANKS WERE IMPORTED FROM JAPAN TO FILL THE VOID.. THE POTTERY WAS MORE POROUS AND HEAVILY CRAZED.. BECAUSE OF THE DIFFERENT SURFACE, FINELY GROUND CLAY WAS MIXED WITH THE CHINA PAINTING ENAMELS, CREATING THE HEAVIER SLIP TYPE PAINT USED ON MOST SATSUMA WARE.. MOST WERE DECORATED BY INDIVIDUALS AT HOMES, IN STUDIOS OR WORKSHOPS, OR IN A SCHOOL TYPE SETTING.. MANY PIECES WILL BE SIGNED BY THE INDIVIDUAL THAT DECORATED THEM.. BECAUSE OF THE POROUS NATURE OF THE CLAY BODY, THE PIECES ARE SUBJECT TO STAINING.. IT USUALLY APPEARS AS SPOTS OF DARKENING IN THE CLAY BODY.. I HAVE HAD LIMITED SUCCESS IN CORRECTING THIS CONDITION.. IT IS BEST TO BE ACCEPTED AS PART OF THE OVERALL CONDITION.. I AM SELLING A COLLECTION SO I WILL BE PUTTING UP MANY MORE PIECES FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION..THANKS.. JEAN O..
