Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE AMERICAN MADE UNGER BROS. STERLING SILVER NUDE ON WAVES ART NOUVEAU MATCH SAFE This is an incredibly ornate and superbly designed and modeled art nouveau styled match safe, matchsafe or vesta case. It features a nude woman relaxing on a background of ocean waves. The matchsafe was made by the American firm of Unger Bros., located in New Jersey from 1872 to 1919. This piece has been in my personal collection since 1998. The piece in my photos is the actual piece you will receive. Please be sure to read the “AGE AND CONDITION” and “Approximate Dimensions” paragraphs below. The silver work is very finely detailed. It is American made and signed (not very boldly) with the words “STERLING 925 FINE,” and 2 Unger Bros. circular “UB” hallmarks, which are both a bit faint. The Unger Bros. logo is pictured in the book Kovel’s American Silver Marks: 1650 to the Present by Ralph & Terry Kovel, and also on the .925-1000 website. The match safe has been monogrammed on the reverse side and the letters are in script and appear to me to read “SHCS.” I see this match safe pictured in the book Pocket Matchsafes; Reflections of Life & Art 1840-1920 by W. Eugene Sanders, Jr. & Christine C. Sanders in Figure 34/2 on page 138. Nice quality, nice condition, and a very attractive and desirable little piece! I do my best to describe all items as accurately as possible and to the best of my ability. Some of my photos may be somewhat lighter or darker than actual to better show detail or color. However, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, or with requests for additional pictures. I will get back to you as soon as I am able. I want your transaction with me to be exactly the way I want mine to be when I am the buyer. Please take a moment and visit our eBay store “TNK Antiques.” You can access our store through a link in any of our eBay listings. Our store has many unique and interesting items in several different categories from 35 years of our dealing and collecting antiques and collectables. Age and Condition This piece dates to circa 1900. The matchsafe is in good original condition. Please look closely at the photos as they are an important part of my description of this item. The hinge and closure mechanism are nice and tight and it opens, closes, and snaps shut crisply, just as it should. There are some minor shallow dents to the back and the edges – see the photos. There are also some age-related signs of use or wear and tarnish to the silver, exactly as I would expect to see on piece of silver of this age. All in all, a very nice old match safe. Please keep in mind these photos can be blown up at least 8-10 times normal, so anything you see will look 8-10 times larger in the photos than it really is. Please note: if you see a dark spot in the photos, it is from my camera and is not a mark on the piece. It will be either just to the right of center towards the bottom or slightly above center on the right side of the photo. Approximate Dimensions About 2.625” (6.6 cm) tall by about 1.875” (4.8 cm) wide and about .5” (1.3 cm) thick. Approximate Weight About .875 ounce (26 grams).
