Folks hate it for the misogyny of Aleister Crowley. Folks love it for the breath-taking power of the art of Lady Freida Harris. The pair took five years, between 1938 and 1943, to complete a project they expected to knock off in a few months. At that time, Crowley had studied the Tarot for more than forty years. But that’s not all he’d studied. The imagery benefits from the latest discoveries in science, mathematics, philosophy and anthropology. “On April 8, 9, and 10, 1904, the climax of his career occurred in Cairo, Egypt. On those days he received, via direct voice transmission, the first communication to humanity from the Hierarchical Forces ruling the earth during the present Age of Aquarius, whose opening the transmission heralded. Transcribed as The Book of the Law, the communication formed the cornerstone of Crowley’s teaching and profoundly influenced the imagery of his deck. The book declared a new law, in which the quintessential godhead of every man and every woman is proclaimed, and the progressive realization of this truth by each individual becomes the sole criterion of evolution.” Lady Freida Harris was married to a distinguished member of British Parliament. “Information on her life is scant but it is clear that she had more to do with the actual design of the Thoth Tarot than has been commonly assumed…. Patiently she worked from Crowley’s rough sketches and verbal descriptions, reading between the lines of the older decks and often painting the same card as many as eight times.” The deck wasn’t published during their lifetimes. The first attempt, in 1969, was poor quality. This one is the result of re-photographing the original paintings, 10½ by 16½, including the original borders.
