ATrtist: Claude Viseux (1927-2008)French Painter, Sculptor and Engraver Claude Viseux abandoned architecture in favor of painting in 1950, the date of his first gestural paintings. His meetings with the architect Jean Prouvé in 1951 (with whom he collaborated on the pavilion for the centenary of aluminum, a removable exhibition hall created in 1954 on a quay of the Seine in Paris, then in 1956 on the design for the Abbé Pierre of the Maison des Jours Meilleurs, a mobile dwelling of around 50m2 which can be produced in series at low cost), with the sculptor Constantin Brâncuși in 1952, can be seen in his personal search for a new form of expression, an approach that places him alongside Corneille, Pierre Alechinsky and Robert Lapoujade within the second School of Paris. Based then on rue de Quatrefages, in the 5th arrondissement of Paris (which he left in 1957 for rue de la Vanne in Montrouge), his first personal exhibition was held at the Vibaud gallery, in Paris, in 1952. His instrumental paintings date from 1953 using random tools (elastics coated in color, stretched and released on the canvas, the trace of which becomes the act of painting). It was the subject of the inauguration exhibition of Daniel Cordier's first gallery in 1956. “Being an observer is not enough: I must take and restore the appearance of things in another nature to better deny reality” he confides as if to illuminate paintings such as The Eye Seen by the Feet (1957). . It was in the years 1959-1960 that the sculpture of Claude Viseux, described as “protean, dreamlike, fantastic” (friend of Max Ernst, Man Ray, Francis Ponge and Henri Michaux, he does not disavow a kinship with Surrealism) replaces painting, his first creations being the objects found on the seaside which he petrifies in wax (and which he precisely calls Petrifications) on the one hand, the imprints of stones and algae cast in bronze from 'somewhere else. In 1960, he signed the Manifesto of the 121 entitled “Declaration on the right to insubordination in the Algerian war”. In 1961, his experiments turned towards organic bodies, notably with his Osteales series made up of assemblages of fossilized bones that he patinated or, on the contrary, stripped, which he screwed, saw, assembled and plasticized. However, he quickly adopted stainless steel - which he and Pol Bury were among the first to use in sculpture - as his preferred material. “It assembles various industrial scraps - pipes, nuts, bolts, tanks... - to create sculptures halfway between the mechanical and the biological” thus restores Sophie Serra. Claude Viseux, who then frequented Jean Tinguely, Piotr Kowalski, Michel Guino, Takis and César, confirms: “My recovery of the industrial element broadens towards special steels, with an attempt at formal vocabulary: bars, profiles, spheres, ball joints, tank bottoms, Boeing combustion chambers, tubing, ship valves. “The artist enters the heart of industrial reality, explores the Renault assembly lines and prowls in the vacant lots around the factories, therefore restoring the encyclopedia Les Muses: he recovers scrap metal, spare parts, car debris, old chassis, a whole series of elements that have become useless. They assemble them, as is, without modifying them. Aggressive or pathetic creatures will emerge from this physical and dialectical combat that the artist engages in with the material and enters the domain of a strange, supernatural poetics. In the years 1967-1970, stainless steel “active structures” thus proceeded from industrial mass production. They are divided into families of combinatorial forms composed by addition, subtraction, multiplication, division. In 1968, Claude Viseux moved to the Villa Baudran in Arcueil, a workshop that he kept until 1992. If imaginary bodies are thus born from the mechanical parts that Claude Viseux borrows from the automobile, the plane and the boat, in 1972, "the symmetry of these pure forms in stainless steel, notes Lydia Harambourg, leads him to question on the notion of unstable equilibrium. His Unstables were thus exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1972 where, Lydia Harambourg recalls, an entire room was devoted “to drawings which take up his mechanical identity vocabulary of spheres, tops, propellers, rings, astrolabes and pendulums”. The Unstable are likewise, in 1973, presented at the Galerie Le Point cardinal in Paris where Claude Viseux had already exhibited in 1968 with Henri Michaux and Joaquin Ferrer. He also participates in the design and creation of ballet sets and costumes. His stainless steel sculptures can be found in many public places. From 1975 to 1992 Claude Viseux was a professor and head of the sculpture workshop at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris. In 1981, he made his first trip to India, a country to which, until 1990, he returned nine times and to which he attributed a significant influence on his work: the colorful compositions that he created then expressed an impregnation of Indian culture. , its rites, its societal codes, its cinema, its music, its shimmering clothing colors. In 1991, he produced around thirty monotypes in the workshop of engraver Tanguy Garric. With his wife Micheline, historian of textiles and printed fabrics, Claude Viseux retired in 1992 to Hossegor, then in 1999 to Anglet where he continued his work on monumental projects until he was carried away by a long and painful illness on November 9, 2008. According to the wishes of the artist, lover of the ocean, his ashes were scattered in the sea.ANTONINI, ANVAR, ARMAN, ARNULF, V. ARTIEDA, ASSADOUR, G. ASSE, G.
