At one time, it was estimated that there were 100,000 nesting pairs of Bald Eagles in the United States. Then, in the 1960's it was estimated that as few as 400 nesting pairs existed due to poaching, habitat destruction and several other causes.Obverse: The obverse features a large and beautiful bald eagle with its wings widely spread in flight. The obverse also has the inscriptions, "Liberty In God We Trust" and "2008."Reverse: The reverse of the coins feature the American Seal used from 1782-1841. The seal shows a Bald Eagle holding a banner which indicates, "E Pluribus Unum."
