Little did they suspect thattheir son in such a short time would become one the best banjopickers this area has ever produced. The first time I remember seeing Cary was about 2 1/2 years ago. Alarge group of pickers had gathered to have an informal session. Carywas sitting cross-legged on the floor holding a banjo, that was almostas large as he was. He was listening to everything the other banjopickers were doing and then would try it himself. I was amazed athis interest and spent a lot of time just watching. It hasn't been all roses for Cary, because he was interested in thesame things all boys his age are, school, playing ball, and many otherthings. As time went on Cary began spending more and more of his spare timewith his banjo. Cary has had the benefit of playing with two of thefinest banjo pickers in the southeast, Ed Brown and Ed James. EdBrown plays some of the best chromatic style I have ever heard whileEd James leans more to straight forward Don Reno style picking. Someof the finer points of both styles have rubbed off on Cary. The other day while picking an old-time fiddle tune, Cary played itthrough straight-forward and then went into the chromatic and playedit again.Another plus for Cary are his parents. They have driven him literlythousands of miles to conventions, festivals, and many other places.Cary has won several contests against some of our best. His greatesttriumph to date was on April 3, 1976, when I had the pleasure of crown-ing him the official Tennessee State Champion Banjo Player.Cary has now formed his own band, Cary Davis and the ChattanoogaCrass, and will be soon heard at many of the festivals this year. All of Cary's success thus far, has not changed him one bit. He isstill the loveable, humble boy he was two years ago when he startedplaying. On Cary's first album he is backed by three fine musicians,Newell Angel on guitar and mandolin, Delmore Brown on bass, andHarold Cummings on mandolin and guitar.Cary, I feel honored that you wanted me to write your liner notes. If you ever need anthying from a bald, broken down mandolin pickerplease call on me.BILL LOWERY710 E.
