Description: This listing is for a 1954 softcover museum catalog titled "Jewish Life and Culture in Detroit" in honor of the American Jewish Tercentenary (1654-1954) for an exhibition help at the Detroit Historical Museum. This 28-page book measures 9" x 6". The inside pages are in excellent condition. The covers have some light soiling and shelf wear. Please see the photos for more detail. Money-back guarantee. The exhibit was designed primarily to interpret Jewish religion and culture to the non-Jewish community. Although we expect many of the more than 75,000 adherents to the Jewish faith in Detroit to visit this exhibit, it has been designed and executed so that it can be readily understood by visitors of other faiths. Labels and explanations do not presume that the visitor has any knowledge of the the subject. The exhibit was divided into four general subjects: 1) Who Really are the Jews traces Jewish history for Biblical times to the present, 2) The Jews In America describes the Jewish contribution on the American scene, 3) Jews in Detroit emphasizes early beginnings, growth of congregations, philanthropic institutions, military and patriotic service, 4) Jewish Ceremonies And Observances in Home And Synagogue. This publication was made possible through the Leonard N. Simons Fund of Temple Beth El. The American Jewish Tercentenary, which marks the establishment of the first organized Jewish community in America, commemorates the unbroken chain of events, over a period of 300 years, resulting in American Jewry's growth from the first 23 who settled in New Amsterdam (now New York City) in 1654 to the present creative Jewish Community of 5,000,000. It was in early September, 1654, that Captain Jacques D La Motte brought his privateer, the St. Charles, up the Hudson River and deposited 23 Jewish refugees from Brazil in New Amsterdam. America became the promised land. Through three centuries, the American Jew has assumed his full share of responsibility in the United States as citizen and human being. They have brought a tradition of learning, of scholarship, of scientific curiosity. The Jews have joined with their brothers in the making of America.
