Description: This doll clothing is original WPA Milwaukee Handicraft Project doll clothing designed for a 19 inch (or possibly smaller) WPA girl doll. This lot includes a pink dress with green trim, pink panties and green cloth shoes. The dress, jacket and panties are stamped with the WPA Milwaukee Handicraft Project mark which is very faded. All that is left of the mark on the dress is the very faded remains of “MIL” which is easier to see in the photo than when looking in person at the same spot in good light. The dress measures 8 inches from the back collar top edge to the bottom edge. The panties measure 4 1/8 inches from the top edge to the bottom edge and 3 3/4 inches wide across the top. The clothing is in excellent condition. This clothing is from the Dr. Charles Walsbren collection of WPA dolls, figures and puppets. I purchased a number of WPA items that came from this collection. The clothing I describe in this listing was said to be for a 19 inch doll. I do not have a 19 inch WPA doll to put them on to see if that is accurate or not. The 19 inch dolls seem to be harder to find than the 22 inch dolls. This clothing is too small to be used on the 22 inch dolls. The Works Project Administration (WPA) was a federal assistance program that put unemployed people to work during the Great Depression. It was part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. Congress voted to approve the WPA on April 8, 1935. Most of the people who were employed by the WPA were employed in construction types of jobs but people were also employed to create items by the Federal Arts Projects and the Women’s and Professional Projects Division of the WPA. The dolls were some of the items made in that program. The purpose of the dolls dressed in the clothing of other countries was educational so that they could be used in schools to demonstrate the customs, culture and dress that would be worn by people from other countries. Please examine the photos closely and purchase based on your own judgement as to condition and value. This item is inventory #11,621.
