Show architect's perspective drawing of the contemplated $4,000 bed active type patient hospital to be constructed at a cost estimated between $25,000,000 and $40,000,000 as one of the units of Chicago's centennial celebration in 1933. The building will rise a temple to Public Health and serve as a clearing house for all the medical and scientific research knowledge of the world. It will be the largest ever constructed and only one of almost a score of other permanent structures dedicated to the arts, sports and industry. Each building will be permanent and devoted to the useful service of mankind. The hospital is the plan of Mr. Edward N. Hurley, war time chairman of the U.S. Shipping Board, and Chairman of the Centennial Committee. He plans to endow fellowships and scholarships to medical men and medical students of foreign lands and thus create a bond of scientific fellowship. The hospital will be erected on a health island, especially made for the purpose off Chicago's lake front and directly opposite the Mall site now housing the Field Museum and Stadium. Mr. Hurley's idea is to make of the Centennial something other than a cockle shell of empty vanity and display as might be represented in costly buildings whose usefulness would end with the termination of the city's celebration of its hundredth birthday. Hurley's idea is to capture the heart of Chicago and forever enshrining it in the works he has in mind. Photo measures 10 x 8 inches. Photo Is dated 1926.
