Description: 1923 Grace Putnam 14.5” Bye-Lo Baby Doll Bisque Head Germany 14.5” Long Head Circumference: 13” (2009 book value Doll Values by Linda Edward: $400-500) Bisque Head, signed: “Copyright 1923 by Grace Storey Putnam Made Germany” (incised in back of bisque head) Finley molded celluloid hands are both marked with, “Turtle in diamond” for Rheinische Gummi Company, Germany. Excellent German glass sleep eyes (seem real) Painted & fired molded hair Designed to represent a 3-day-old newborn, the “Bye-Lo” baby by Grace Putnam, 1923, became a huge success – for children as well as adults, as a very unique attraction & convincingly real! The cloth body with bent legs & loosely floppy head look & feel like a real baby, especially when dressed. She comes dressed in a fabulous complex period vintage outfit! Her antique clothing is all contemporaneous: white cotton with lace slip with 4 layers of stitched folds. The hand embroidered organdy ruffled bonnet with silk ribbon matches the organdy gown with eyelet bodice. The skirt of the dress has a few carefully mended small holes on one side, but is in excellent condition otherwise. Pink panties & crocheted booties complete the layette. There is a non-working crier. The cloth body with kapok stuffing is well-preserved & intact with no odors & almost no wear or stains. (smoke free) There are no cracks, chips, scuffs, nor scratches on the head nor hands. They eyes & lids are in great condition. An unusually lovely example of this very popular doll!
