Description: This hardcover edition of Middlemarch by George Eliot was published by Hurst and Company circa 1890. Hurst founded his publishing company in 1871, the same year the novel was first published. He published several other similarly designed books in the 1890s. The boards are in very good condition, with minimal wear. The owners name is written inside the cover and is dated 1903. The front-end papers are marblized. Both the front and back hinges are cracked. The pages are tanned, and a few dog eared. The variety of Middlemarch's characters and conflictsgives readers a thorough view of social issues in the early nineteenth century, many of which continue to be relevant to today's society. Most characters marry for love rather than obligation, yet marriage still appears negative and unromantic. Marriage and the pursuit of it are central concerns in the novel, but unlike in many novels of the time, marriage is not considered the ultimate source of happiness. Written from a feminist perspective, George Eliot is the pen name of Mary Ann Evans. Middlemarch remains one of the greatest works of English literature.
