J. Lee enlisted in the Mexican War in 1847 from Missouri In 1848, John requested 160 acres of land from the government because of his service in the Mexican War. He was granted that at Buffalo, Dallas County, Missouri on May 1861. Capt. John A. J. Lee served in the organization of the Missouri Home Guards in Barry County and Stone County, in Missouri. His Militray Record :"Santa Fe Trace Batt's, Missouri Volunteers; Mexican War (Lt. Col. William Gilpin)--J.A.J Lee, Private--Capt. Thomas Jones Company B. mounted--age 30--enrolled September 8, 1847, Ft. Lee, who has engaged for 26 years in the practice of medicine is approved to continue--April 2, 1883, Hanibal, Missouri--November 14, 1883--certificate Number 7" letter dated Feb 16, 1886-- During the Civil War, Dr John. Lee served several months as a replacement surgeon from Rolla, Phelps County, Missouri. On his service papers it is written that he was never paid--that he would have to prove that he owed nothing to the U.S. Government before they would pay him. At the bottom it states, simply "never paid". It makes one wonder if his sympathies were so divided; his brother Asa, served on the Confederate side from Tennessee, as did many of his relatives and friends. However, his sons, Thomas & David, the two oldest boys & his sons-in-laws, John W. Huff & Alex Culbertson, served from Missouri for the Union. He fought in the battle of Wilson Creek, Springfield, Missouri - Union Army. He was called back to duty in 1864-Promoted to rank of Major, 63rd Reg. Co . Dr. John had disability from the war. Rachel applied for his pension, after his death in 1889 in the amount of $8.00 per month. Rachel signed applications with an X.
