"Hampton, Feb. 19, 1867 Judge Potter, Dear Sir, Yours of the 12th inst. has been received. I thank you for the copy of Petition. The Mill commonly called "Garland's Mill" was on Taylor's River, which runs between the towns of Hampton & Hampton Falls. Thomas Leavitt, as early as 1644, married Isabella, widow of Francis Asten (as the name is written on our records). He died, as per record, November 28, 1696, aged "above 80." P.S. The age may have been considerably above 80. I find in no less than seven instances the age of persons deceased stated in the same way near that time. One of the cases was that of William Cole, whose wife Eunice Cole, in a petition not long before his death, says he was 88 years old. I cannot give any information in relation to Col. E.J. Long. If you have occasion to mention the captains in the time of the Revolution, I can give you some account of Capt. Henry Elkins & Capt. Samuel Nay. Capt. Nay after the war, removed to Raymond, but he was a native of Hampton & belonged here at the time of the Revolution. --- Back side (Feb. 19, 1867): The 3rd vol. of Adjt. General's Report i.e. vol. 1 for 1866, has been received. Yours truly, Joseph Dow."
