Description: BOHEMIA UNDER AUSTRIAN DESPOTISM: Being an Autobiography of Anthony M. Dignowity of San Antonio, Texas The autobiography of a colorful and controversial early citizen of Texas, a Czech refugee who fled from foreign oppression in his native land. Dignowity was persecuted for his fiery abolitionist stance, and the book was written in part as a retort to his critics. But the majority of the text paints a vivid picture of his early life: He suffered from poverty in his youth, but his descriptions of family life and vignettes of the Bohemian countryside convey a strong sense of affection. His experiences as fugitive and rebel soldier, his boyhood occupations of pretzel vendor and birdcatcher, his stay in the Catholic Charity Hospital of Prague, and his conversion of a Hamburg prostitute to respectability are among the details that make the book interesting to a modern reader. This 1859 hardcover first printing is in very good condition. The book was rebound not long ago using its original covers, given a new spine and cover corners. The covers show fairly minor age and wear as seen in the photos. The binding is tight; the text is toned with age but otherwise in very good shape, no writing, tears, or other significant flaw. The book was self-published in one small edition and is very rare and hard to find. Measures 5.25" X 7.75", 237 pages. Ships promptly & securely
