Description: For sale is a great 1856 Braided Hair Large Cent. The Braided Hair Large Cent was minted from 1839 to 1857, and the Large Cent came right before they changed the one cent coin to the smaller version that we are familiar with today. The Large Cent, as the name implies, is much larger than today's cent. Believe it or not it was just a tad smaller than the size of a half dollar, and are made of 100% copper. In 1856 they made a couple different varieties of this coin; this is the "upright 5" variety, which refers to the type of font used for the "5" in the date. What makes this coin so top shelf is its very high grade, which is always tough to find these coins in.As you can see from the pics the coin is in amazing condition. It is incredibly rare to find a Large Cent this old in really nice grades as this because they were so heavily circulated. It would come in at a nice XF grade. The date, lettering, and all images are all sharp and bold. The word LIBERTY on the top of the bust head is nice and bold, which is usually the first to wear down on these old copper coins. All the fine hairlines on the bust are sharp as well. It has a darker toned patina to it, and has no damage or major blemishes. This is a top shelf vintage coin to add to any coin collection at a great price! Thanks!
