Description: Claude Pouillet was a highly influential physicist and instructor who developed a variety of important theories about optics, electricity, magnetics, and other scientific topics. He is famous for the Pouillet effect which discusses the heat produced by wetting dry sand. This text is very nice: it is in very good condition with some foxing but otherwise, no problems. There is a wonderful book plate inside the front and the binding is signed “Carss and Coy” of Glasgow. Best of all are the wonderful fold-out plates in the back. Each is amazing, depicting scientific instruments, planets, telescopes and other items pertinent to the student of physics and meteorology. Attractive covers with gilt decoration of laurel wreath encircling “via Veritate vita” surmounting a grouping of items. Highly decorated spine has ridges separating the bands and gilt lettering with gilt vines in alternating bands. A variety of tables for various experiments scattered throughout the text. Please see pictures; we will gladly take more and send them along. Good Condition: 8vo, Leather Binding with laurel wreath decoration on front and back. Vol. 1 spine label missing. Embossed decoration around the edges of front and back matching turndown embossing. Marble endpapers and marble edge. Volume 1 with 23 fold out diagrams and drawings at rear, intact and very good, some with edges slightly beyond the block; fold out table in text slightly outside block. Volume 2 has 22 fold out plates in rear, one with foldover at edge and foxing present on all. Foxing, a few water stains, and rippling throughout text. “Elements de Physique Experimentale et de Meteorologie”. Claude Pouillet. Paris: Librarie de L. Hatchette et Cie. 1853. COLN1853AIJA
