Description: US Scott 9X1 5c George Washington. Black on bluish paper, 1845 New York Postmaster Provisional Issue, ACM initials. The impression is strong, no major faults though hinged on back, without gum as issued, appears unused in excellent condition. In New York City, Robert H. Morris was appointed postmaster on May 21, 1845. Morris issued the first Postmasters' provisional stamp on July 14, 1845. These stamps could only be purchased at the city's post office and the stamps were canceled in pen ink by Morris or his assistants, in this case ACM for Alonzo Castle Monson.
