Description: 1837 $2 1/2 Classic Head Gold Quarter EaglePCGS graded MS62Variety HM-1, R3 Mintage 45,080PCGS/NGC graded population 507 Early strike without the common obverse bisecting die crack often seen. The obverse stars show complete radial lines (although thin), the die crack at the left wingtip is very thin and the leaf and berry stems on the reverse are strong. Doubling of the legend is evident at "D STATES OF" and at the left wing tip (strike doubling?). Daryl Haynor's book "United States Classic Gold Coins of 1834-1839" states in part, "Finding an 1837 quarter eagle in uncirculated condition is difficult. They are rarer than the 1834, 1835, 1836 or 1838 coins of Philadelphia, and are as rare as the 1839-O." He also states, "Though most areas of the obverse and reverse on an 1837 quarter eagle are well struck, the detail in the extreme center of the obverse and reverse are not...So while you are most likely to find an 1837 with a pleasing strike, you will rarely find one that is completely and boldly struck...On the obverse, the hair below the fillet from the curls on the top of the forehead through the curl in the front of the [ear] usually lacks full detail. This is especially noticeable on the large curl directly above the ear. The finest known pieces show a decent amount of hair detail...Almost all 1837 coins lack full radial lines... On the reverse, it is nearly impossible to find a fully struck shield." Aside; I highly recommend Haynor's book "United States Classic Gold Coins of 1834-1839" to anyone collecting Classic Head Quarter and Half Eagles. It has significantly more information and detailed photos missing in previously published documents. Excellent resource. Will ship via USPS Registered Mail, signature required.
