We Glady Combine Multiple Items to Save Shipping Fees Description: It is an original antique copper engraved print approximately 230 years old from Lamarck's Tableau Encyclopedique et Methodique des Trois Regnes de la Nature, Botanique, Tome 2, published by Panckoucke, Paris, 1793, a copy of the title page is included, see the pic of the title page below. Overall, a really nice example of a late 18th century natural history botanical plate, produced during a period in which naturalist were fascinated with the categorizing and discovery of new species. It is not a Modern reprodution nor a reprint. It is being sold as a single antique print, that is not mounted, matted, nor framed. Size: The image area measures 6 1/2 by 9 inches (16x23cm) on a 9x12" page (23x32cm)Condition: The print is in Very Good condition for its age, blank on the reverse, printed on a heavy cotton hand laid page with deckled edges typical of the 18th century. There is one small rust spot, otherwise it is very clean. One could easily trim the deckled edges if desired, although we are selling it as a complete page in its original state, which is often desired by collectors, see the detailed pics for more on condition. The pics are of the actual print.Jean-Baptiste de Monet, Chevalier de Lamarck (1744-1829), usually referred to simply as Lamarck, was a French naturalist with a range of interest in botany and zoology and a proponent of natural evolution. He was a member of the French Academy of Sciences in 1779, mentored by Georges-Louis Leclerc and Comte de Buffon. He was commissioned as a royal botanist in 1781 and was appointed Chair of Botany for the Jardin des Plantes in Paris in 1788 after Buffon retired. Lamarck was involved in numerous publications, which among those are the sections on botany and zoology for Panchoucke's massive Tableau Encyclopedique . . . , from which this print comes. He largely relied on the French illustrators Jacques De Seve and L. Fossier, who are often credited in the bottom left of these prints according to their contribution. Jacques Renaud Benard's name, appears in the bottom right as "Benard Direxit" whose large atelier of engravers in Paris were responsible for the copper printing plates.
