Description: 1636-1797 Malta, Knights Of Malta 2 Tari, KM#65, 4 Countermarks A nice example of this popular countermarked type. The four and two Tari coins normally struck in silver were issued in copper due to the depleted Treasury of the Order. The countermarking of these coins started during the reign of Jean-Paul Lascaris Castellar (1636 - 1657) because of counterfeiting both within Malta and abroad. There are 8 different countermarks applied during the reigns of 6 Grand Knights. This example has countermarks of:Rafael Cotoner, 1660-1663, Head of John the Baptist, Adrien de Wignacourt,1690-1697, Crowned Fleur-De-Lys Emmanuel Pinto, 1741-1773, Crowned Crescent & Monogram Emmanuel de Rohan, 1775-1797, Crowned Mascle & Paschal Lamb Host is well worn. The countermarks are reasonably well struck. I would grade the host Poor (Sheldon AG3) and the counterstamps Fine (Sheldon VF25) but I have provided high-resolution close up photos so you can decide on a grade for yourself. For uncertified coins I provide a grading opinion using both the UK descriptive system and the Sheldon scale (based on ANA Grading Standards and/or PCGS Photograde) which will be better known to my US customers. I offer a grading opinion as a courtesy, but please examine the high resolution close up photos carefully and decide on a grade for yourself.
