Description: THIS IS A NEWLY SALVAGED SHIPWRECK!!! This wreck is currently being called the Pipa de Arcilla Shipwreck. The wreck was first discovered in 1979 by a father son duo of Spiny Lobster fisherman in international waters in the northern Caribbean. The location of the wreck was a closely guarded family secret until recently, with the grandson/son of the original finders bringing Shipwreck specialist Marc Antony to the site. Once salvage work began, one thing became incredibly clear. The ship was carrying a lot of pipes. The vast majority of artifacts found on the wreck were clay pipes with Dutch markings (see last 2 pictures). Additionally, a couple hundred Potosi Mint 8 reales dating to the Reign of Philip III (1598-1621) and a few Spanish Netherlands Ducatoons dating to the early 1600s were discovered. Given the location, cargo, and other evidence, the salvors believe that this ship was a lone merchant ship of Dutch origin that was conducting illicit trade with Spanish colonies when she sank sometime in the 1620s.
