Another reason we voted for that shield, is that it created an interface between the board we used as the brain of the Robot and the Nano board dedicated to the actuators. It made it very easy to switch between controlling the robot with a regular RC remote control and controlling the robot with the Autonomous Control board. It was a key advantage for several reasons, for one thing we were able to do a lot of testing iterations very quickly. We could test multiple scenarios manually with the help of a standard RC remote control to decide what the best approach in developing the robot AI was. The pots solved an issue we had with any of the continuously rotating servos we tried, which is that even two identical continuously rotating servos always require slightly different pulse length to be in neutral or stopped position. The robot uses caterpillars like actuators so it is important that both side are stopped when the Nano shield is receiving a neutral pulse from the RC Radio or from the Autonomous Control board. With the pots to make adjustments that was no longer an issue. That saved us time and money because it eliminated completely the need for rotary encoders for us. Oh yeah and Pots were also convenient to make some adjustments to the two other types of servos and the one brushless motor we had on our robot, all that while running the robot."The switches were a great help too, we were able to use some of them to multiplex the function of some of the pots. The remaining switches gave us the opportunity to create multiple modes of operation for similar inputs coming from the Autonomous Control board to the Nano Shield. The most amazing thing is that our initial idea was to put the AI and the Actuators code in the Autonomous Control board but because we decided to use that Nano Shield we had to decouple the AI code from the Actuators code and by doing that we ended up with a much cleaner much more flexible solution. Our Code is more manageable. Thanks to that decoupling we were also able to develop several AI boards to control the same robot. Basically we can easily switch between an Arduino, a Raspberry pi or Beagle-bone as the AI board depending on how much AI power we need. The judges really liked our design. Some of them told us afterward that they were really impressed that we had followed that path. The truth is that our solution made everything much easier and much more manageable. Adding an interface board between the AI board and the Actuators really simplified everything in the end.But going back to the beginning, the coolest thing and also the real reason that got us that elegant solution is that with that Nano shield we could use monster power for our actuators, so we ran with it and never looked back."
